Four years after we 1st did my original christmas play "The Greatest Gift of All," we were at our current church, where Joe is the music pastor, presenting it again. It was the 3rd & final night of our dinner theater. Joe's mom Joyce was in the audience, along with my son Jimmy, and my brothers George and Joe. Except for the 15 mins while he performed as a singing shephard (yes I twisted his arm to be in the show), Joe stood beside me in the tech booth running sound. Everything went really well except for a minor blip when Joe cued "Sleigh Ride" in the middle of the Bethlehem scene!! Picture this....Joseph & Mary together in the stable holding precious babyJesus as the shepherds are approaching from the fields. All of the sudden from the heavens (speakers) plays "Just hear those sleigh bells jingl-ing ring ting tingling too, come on its lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you!" OMGosh!!!! Joe cued the wrong music!!! I almost had a heart attack!!!! He said nobody noticed! Sleigh rides, ting tinglings? Nobody noticed? Yeah, right babe! :) I laugh about it now but boy...in those 2 seconds I sprouted mutiple gray hairs!!! :) Now, I'm sure the mishap must have been his nerves?? :)
At the end of the show, Joe went up on stage and called all of the cast & crew up to thank everyone and have them take their final bows! He then called the director up...me....to introduce me. This is all usual, nothing out of the ordinary...not even me walking on stage in my Christmas socks!! After Joe said somethings about me, everyone graciously stood and clapped while I bowed. All of the sudden, the audience started roaring and clapping louder and harder. I glanced around and saw my son & brothers...they had their cell phones out and were recording us!! I thought, " Oh how sweet are they!" The audience continued to clap off the charts and seemed to go just nuts! I then thought, "WOW, they liked the showed that much?" I admit, I thought everyone did great and the comical changes I made for the "grumpa" character were implemented great by my brother Joe, but their applause where totally exaggerated! I even heard our Women's Ministry Leader Carol Fano yell out and thought "Oh there's the New Yorker in her, she must have really liked the show!" That made me feel good! :)
Turned to me, with his side facing the audience, Joe was fidgeting, underneath his sheperds costume, trying to get something out of his pant pocket!!! That's what everyone was cheering about!! Some , like the 'New Yorker" clearly thought he was gonna do the "ring thing!" Before I knew it, he was on his knee, presenting a ring and asking me to marry him! In front of 300+ people! It took all my might not to cry! I just bent over and tried to contain my feelings!! One of my cast (into a mic) said "you didnt answer him" then shoved the mic into my hand. I didnt reaize that nobody heard my answer, not even Joe! I can't imagine what he was thinking when I "didnt answer him" and I bent over with emotions! I jokingly answered (again) saying, " I dont know, theres no script for this!!!" hahaha!!! Everyone laughed but you should have seen his face! For a split second, he looked worried! Poor guy! Of course I said, Of course!!!! The entire worship center erupted in laughter and cheers!!! There are no perfect words to describe how that moment felt! I had this man that I'm so in love with standing in front of me, smiling in happiness and I had a promise on my finger! WOW! It was made more perfect because my family, my future mom in law and our church family were all witness to one of the greatest moments in my life! It was all so perfect!! We were both (still are) so touched at how cleary excited and happy everyone was for us! Such a wonderful show of support! What a most amazing proposal from the most amazing man!!!! Perfect!
I'm am just so grateful his proposal was recorded. After he introduced me, and I took my bow, I got busy "directing" our friend Mark to give various actors the bouquets of flowers we had purchased for just this moment, the finale. I was babbling away on the opposite side of the stage when Joe started sharing "mushy" about me...as he was leading up to his proposal!! Someone had to pull me over to stand in front of Joe, I was so oblivious!! haha! I missed some of the best part!!! Thank God, my family recorded it! I've watched it a zillion times..and my feelings and smile are identical to what they were that night! What a great memory!!!! My guy as a shepherd proposing!!! :()
The date of our engagement, December 15th, is a very significent date for me and my family. My Nana passed away 22 years ago on this day. She was an amazing woman and I miss her still, so very much. We all do. Not only do we share our proposal date with the date my Nana first saw the face of Jesus, in some very real way, I feel like she was right there with me on that stage! For Joe to ask me to be his wife on this date, during this play, (the same play we did many years ago when he first showed faith in me) speaks to the very kind of man he is...so unbelievably thoughtful and special. I am truly blessed. We are truly blessed.
Now, for me, December 15th will never be as bad as it has been since Nana left my life.... I especially love Joe for this!
What the Groom has to say about the Bride:
The sound of her laughter, the look on her face when she is in deep thought …. The “little girl” look on her face when something intrigues her…. Her tenderness, her kindness, the way she lights up the room upon entering ….the generous way she is always willing to help others. The peace and contentment she brings…the serenity in her voice, the way she loves, the sweetness of her spirit and the softness of her heart….She was created truly beautiful from the inside out.. These are just a few of the many great qualities about Laura… the qualities that I see and love about her…
What started as a beautiful friendship blossomed into something even more beautiful. We’ve laughed together and we’ve cried together as we have walked through some of life’s most difficult moments… I am very excited for the great things ahead in our journey as we share life together and as we celebrate the joy of a new tomorrow, I look forward to our “Someday” that I can see ahead on the horizon..…. The thought of spending a life with her lifts me off of my feet… Her presence brings me peace and her smile melts my heart… I couldn’t imagine life without her, and I thank God for bringing Laura into my life… how blessed I am to be able to share life with her and have the very special connection we have…Connected by our hearts we are one... with each passing day I love her even more….
What the Bride has to say about the Groom:
As a girl, if someone asked me what I wanted in a guy, I'd rattle off from my mental list all the things that my "Mr. Right" would be. He'd be smart, funny, respectful and, of course, cute (yes, cute was last)! He'd also be "super romantic!" I'd fantasize about our long, barefoot, hand in hand, walks on the beach to a setting sun. I'd daydream about him serenading me with the most romantic songs. My "Mr Right" would tell me how beautiful I was to him and that there was no one else in this "whole wide world" that he'd ever want to be with...EVER! :)
He'd open doors for me every time one was a barrier. Like Superman, he'd protect me and keep me safe. He'd always pull my chair out as we sat for romantic candle lit dinners (minus the violins). Of course, my "Mr. Right" would always send me red roses for all the special occasions and for no occasion at all but to say "I love you" followed by exes and ohs (on the card)! xoxoxoxo! He'd give me gushy cards, large boxes of chocolates and win me big stuffed animals at the carnival! :) I'm sure that it would come as no surprise to you that he, many times, proposed to me by putting a diamond ring in a large, heart shaped box of chocolates on Valentines day! ;) He was every single leading man in every single romantic movie! Yes, that was my "Mr Right." He sounds pretty amazing right?
Well eventually I "grew up" and realized that my "Mr. Right" was pretty common! Most (I said most) guys present as "Mr. RIght" at first. After all, they bring their "A" game when trying to win the girl! Those leading men, well, they got paid to play a part! RIght? Now what?? I had to revamp my "Mr. Right" list! In doing so, I realized that it's the "uncommon" that made a guy "Mr. Right." Its in the differences that a guy stands out. So my "Mr. Right" changed to "Mr. Uncommon," lovingly nicknamed "UNIQUE!"
So...about the groom! Everything Joe says, does, believes and dreams is from his pure heart. He humbly respects life and the gift of a new day, every single day! Joe looks at things as if he's seeing them for the very first time, everytime! He revels in all things created whether it be a bunch of ants marching in a trail (even if on the kitchen counter) to the constellations in the night sky. I can't tell you how many times he points out Orion's Belt and I know that I can always count on those "lessons." Joe's zest is qutie contagious and entertaining! <3
Joe also respects others-their life and journey. He always strives to motivate & support their goals, dreams, talents & gifts while lifting them up with encouragement & in prayer. He sees the good in everyone in any & all circumstances. He believes that where there is faith, passion & desire there's a will and an act to believe, overcome and achieve.
Joe is inately sweet and kind with a tender, gentle way about him yet it's not only in his "way" but in his "why" that makes him an exceptionally attractive man. Why? Joe has tremendous love & fatih in God. He strives to love others the way he knows God loves him and them. He leads worship through his heartfelt prayers and gifted singing voice with the desire to open people's hearts to feel the presence of God. A presence he feels love, grace, hope & mercy in. A blessing he wishes for us all to know and feel.
Knowing Joe is a blessing...being loved by Joe is miraculous. All the ways he loves me has saved me in many ways. Joe often tells me that there is no "on" or "off" switch for his love for me. He has shown me what unconditional love and acceptance is, giving me the safety to love and dream fearlessly. My fiance has also restored my faith and given me the "confidence" to re-enter and grow in my personal relationship with God. A relationship that had weakened after life "beat me up." Joe has also renewed my appreciation for life and all of its wonderful, endless possibilites.
There are so many things that knowing & loving Joe has done for me but it's what he makes me want to do for him, because of him, that is especially important to me. Because I can be who I inately am with Joe, I want to love him, serve him, honor him, and respect him as his wife and friend. I also want to serve God with Joe, following and supporting his leadership within his ministry. I welcome and look forward to being a worship leaders wife, his wife, in our home and in our church. I want to make him proud to have me by his side because I am so proud and blessed to be there.
Joe knows how I love him and what I feel for him but what I haven't told him is that, from my "young" girls list of who my "Mr Right" would be, to my "adult" woman's realization of the value in a "Mr. Uncommon," I am so happy and fortunate to say that Joe is both...making him the man I have been in love with for my entire life! This makes him my "Mr. Perfect!"
I often silently question what I have done to deserve this man's love but then I hear Joe's voice say, "God loves you" and then it all makes perfect sense.
We consider "Our Story" a story of 2nd chances.
We met in the fall of 2008. Joe was the Music Pastor of a church that I had just started to attend. It was my 1st day in attendance and, from the stage, a combination of his amazing voice and the words he sang out, reached deep inside of me. I was so moved that I approached him after service. I introduced myself (something completely out of character) and gave compliment to his voice. While we talked, I noticed that he didnt maintain eye contact with me. He kept looking away... the floor, the ceiling, his guitar. I wondered what so intrigued him about his own fingers! That day I left thinking, "What a shame. He has such a great voice & he's so insecure. Poor thing!"
Before long, I started critiquing the "setting" of the stage. Via emails, I would suggest to him that this or that needed to be this way or that way! Another out of character behavior for me. After all, who the heck was I? Apparently, Joe liked my ideas/ my initiative and invited me to join the Worship Planning Team. When he asked, I didnt know much about it other then it was a team of people brain storming ideas to be implemented during church services. I thought, "Oh hey, I have ideas" so I accepted! This was the beginning of our "creative" relationship!
Fast forward a year later. I was asked to combine 2 scripts to make one play for the church Christmas theater. The scripts were horrible! One was about a grandmother dying and the other spoke about Mary not being a virgin!!!! Really?? How do you combine those topics!!!! Geez! (btw...Joe did not send them to me) To say the least, It would have been a depressing, controversial play so, nutso me, decided to write a play and pass it along to Joe. Ask me if I'd ever written a play before!! So, from a wheelchair and under the influence of pain medication (just had ankle surgery), I put pencil to paper and dove in!!!
As I would complete a scene or 2, I forwarded my creation to Joe. Ultimately, not only did he NOT read the script in its entirety, he insisted that I direct the play myself! What???? I had never done anything like that before and I wrote it "drugged!" ;) All I kept thinking was, "This was his ministry and it could take a huge ugly hit if I fail!" Never mind that the church was opening up the show/selling tickets to the public!! I was a wreck! He was plain crazy! I will never forget the 1st time we ran the promo for ticket sales during service. After it was over, Joe turned to me and said,"I guess there's no turning back now!" What? You mean that was an option!! Nobody told me!!! I could have kicked him (he was joking)!! After months of rehearsals, with me in the directors chair, the show went on and was a great success! What did Joe say to me afterwards? "See, I knew that you could do it!" He most certainly did! :),
I'm not sure if he was crazy or smart but it was Joe's belief in me, and my trust in him, that brought us through some very difficult breaks in our personal lives. As new neighbors, we helped each other through heartbreaking, life changing circumstances, decisions and events.
During our personal storms, we found solace in one another. We cried together when we hurt; hoped together when things were so unpredictable; laughed together when we were blessed to see a funny; sat quietly together during the times when circumstance left us speechless. We grew to depend on one another when our worlds seemed so undependable.
What can I say about God's timing? It may have nothing to do with our own and it certainly doesnt take into account our readiness! We can certainly attest to this! It was as if, one day we both woke up and both realized that we had fallen in love with the only person that life made sense. The neighbor!!! ;) That one person whose smile makes you feel beautiful again....whose voice makes you feel safe....whose touch makes you feel "home" and whose presence makes you see an incredible future!
I won't say that I wasn't terrified with the realization that our feelings had taken on a promotion!! I was. I laugh now but for quite a while when Joe shared his "romantic" feelings with me, I would very quickly get teenage girly butterflies and then immediately get nervous and want to "run" out of there! I would abruptly tell him that I had to go "let the dogs out" and run home!! (my dogs had a doggie door and could let themseles out) I'm not sure when Joe realized I was "running" with my great getaway scheme but he did! One day he started getting word mushy and I did my usual, "dogs need to go out" leap. He beat me to the door and put his arm up to block my mad dash exit! He looked at me and said, "the dogs dont really need to be let out do they?" I was sooo busted!!!
Btw...it turns out Joe is not a "poor" insecure thing! During one of his mush fests (which I love), he admitted that when he first met me, he couldnt look into my eyes...they were the most beautiful eyes he had ever seen!!! Awww.....he still gets points for that one!! :)
God's timing? Perfect! We are engaged obviously and I still get girly butterflies and blush (see amazing engagement story under "Proposal" & the video under "Photos") but now I only run into his arms! <3 Oh and once in a while, I try to use my eyes, to my benefit, especially when working within a wedding budget! ;)
It is so important for us to vow our lives and love to one another, a covenant under God, surrounded by you, our family and friends. Thank you all for your love and support! We hope to celebrate with you all on our special weekend!
From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you all for supporting us, loving us, being a part of our special day with us and sharing your lives with us. God has blessed us with all of you.
Surrounded by our loved ones and some very special Pastor's, we will "practice" our first "I DO' forever! Joe's wedding band will be delivered tonight! Will breathe AFTER it's in my hand!
This band is so special as we designed it to represent "3 strands"." Ecclesiastes 4:12 "...and if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quicly torn apart."
Yahoooo! No turning back now!!!! ;)
